Proportional Accountability

Accountability Systems · Distribution · Proportionality

Questionable Event

?

Are differences in contribution, sequence, magnitude, and impact preserved when responsibility is distributed?

Proportional accountability is not scorekeeping for its own sake. The pattern is keeping materially unequal contributions from being flattened into equal responsibility.

Primary Classification

Type
  • Proportional Accountability
  • Weighted Ownership

Structural Placement

Supports
  • Accountability System
  • Shared Accountability
  • Blame Systems

Primary Function

Preserves meaningful differences in how much, when, and in what way each contribution affected the outcome.

Operational Elements

  • Contribution magnitude remains visible
  • Sequence remains visible
  • Impact differences remain visible
  • Responsibility can be unequal while shared

Common Associations

  • Shared Accountability
  • False Equivalence
  • Accountability Equalization
  • Blame Concentration

Internal Outcomes

  • More accurate ownership boundaries
  • Reduced pressure to accept an equal share automatically
  • Clearer repair expectations
  • Better distinction between context and cause

Observable Outcomes

  • Responsibility language becomes specific
  • Different participants may own different amounts
  • Correction tracks actual contribution
  • “Both sides” language is tested rather than assumed

Structural Observation

Within the Narcy Studies Lab framework, Proportional Accountability describes the preservation of meaningful differences in contribution, sequence, magnitude, or impact when accountability is distributed.

Several people can be involved without the math magically becoming equal. The structure begins when differences remain visible instead of being flattened for convenience. Shared accountability does not require equal accountability.

Field Guidance

Healthy proportionality can change as better information appears. Proportional Accountability is different from punishment arithmetic; it is an accuracy rule for ownership.
