describes an accountability-reversal mechanism that redirects attention away from the original concern. One defensive response may simply reflect surprise, shame, or misunderstanding. The structure begins when a concern repeatedly triggers the same sequence: the event is denied, the person raising it is attacked, and the roles are reversed until the original issue is replaced by a new accusation. The pattern is not ordinary defensiveness.
The pattern is accountability reversing direction.
Field Guidance
Healthy accountability can include disagreement, clarification, and competing recollections while still returning to the original concern. DARVO is different. Once the pattern becomes visible, denial, attack, and role reversal are no longer viewed as isolated reactions. They become part of the retention structure when they repeatedly move attention away from observable conduct and toward defending the person who raised it.
